What Lacrosse for LIFE means to me
We'll post testimonials from players, coaches, volunteers and families. Add your thoughts by clicking on "comments"!
“Lacrosse for LIFE engages young people in on-the-field lessons and life-lessons. It connects young athletes to the sport, to each other and to caring adult role-models. This combination results in powerful, memorable experiences for the youth.” -Cory Wechsler, Training and Education, Team Up for Youth.
Team Up is one of the key organizations from which we receive educational, cultural and fundraising training.
"The program has offered our inner city youth a new solution…an opportunity to build basic knowledge, skills and competencies in sports and empowerment. The program has given inner-city youth solutions to problems we thought we couldn't solve. Through disciplined concentration on playing lacrosse and working as a
team, the answers have come - some quickly, some slowly. Each athlete found a new sense of self. This awakening prompted the willingness to be a part of the program and work together…a solution brought on from the change the program offers." -Danielle Richardson, Adult Care Services, Community Gatepath, and team parent
"Through lacrosse, kids are welcomed into communities they may never have believed open to them. Through hard work on the field, they develop their skills, strength, concentration and speed, giving them the confidence to work hard in the classroom.
Lacrosse for LIFE gave my son a wonderful place to be during middle school and grow into a young man who has respect for the game, those he played with, and his coaches. He learned how to work hard, made great friends and stayed healthy. We feel so lucky that he had the opportunity to play lacrosse, see so many places, and learn how to have fun without using drugs or alcohol.
Lacrosse gave him an identity, and a way to be "kool", without getting involved in all the bad things parents worry about. Thank you Lacrosse for LIFE for being just what my son needed." -Lucy Irwin, team parent
"It comes across. People who are watching just see how hard our kids play and they start cheering for us." -Josh Miller, co-founder
It allows for growth and expansion. (The children) have to understand that things that are unfamiliar aren't necessarily bad. They owe it to themselves to explore. The greatest lacrosse player on the planet may be playing basketball on the hardtop and never exposed to the game." -James Taylor, former Principal, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Academic Middle School
"A lot of kids out there don’t know what lax is; if you are introduced to this sport, like me, you'll fall in love with this. A lot of kids are out there on the streets, drinking, using drugs, breaking the law; lax keeps you busy, right after the practice, you have to get the homework done so you can play lacrosse." -Cobar, Burton High School
"It helps me focus more in school; I didn’t have a clue what lacrosse was until my cousin Jabari told me about it. I thought it was sort of like running on the grass but didn’t know what it was. It keeps me off the streets. I am getting closer to different sports." -Reneil, Martin Luther King Academic Middle School
"Thank you to the Native Americans who invented this sport. Thanks to the coaches and the funders and founders of this team for helping us learn and teaching us how to play lacrosse. I wouldn’t be able to play this game without your support and help, thank you." -Kenyana, San Francisco Community School
"Thanks to all coaches for starting a good program that helps kids get into sports. We wouldn’t be able to afford this sport if it weren't for the sponsors and we have a team with lots of personality, this is an expensive sport and the sponsors really help us afford it." -Satchel, 2008 Coach Miller Bulldog Trophy recipient
"That's alright. It's not…really anything to get frustrated about. 'Cause all these other kids, they've been out for ten years, and this is our first year and we still given' 'em a little heat." -Darryl at 13, First Bulldog Captain, referring to the Bulldogs' win/loss record.
"I think that I'm…making a new goal for myself - doin' somethin' different." -Dominick at 12, Bulldog player
"It's something new. I like to prove other people wrong. My family comes to watch us. Some of them wish that lacrosse was around when they were younger so they would have had the same opportunity to play."
-Harold at 12, Bulldog player. Harold, a member of our first team
