Josh Miller began to contact several non-profit and community organizations in the Portola and Bayview neighborhoods of San Francisco.
Mr. Hank Molloy (President of the N. California Chapter of USLacrosse) introduced Josh to Mr. Damone Hale, a youth sports organizer
February 2001
Damone introduced Josh to Principal James Taylor of Martin Luther King Jr. Academic, a Portola middle school.
Hank also facilitated the introduction of Johanna Thomashefski to Josh.
March - July 2001
After several meetings with Josh, Principal Taylor agreed to allow an introduction of lacrosse to six PE classes of 5th and 6th grade boys and girls.
Josh recruited Andy McDonald to assist with these sessions.
During the PE sessions, the players used equipment provided by several in-kind donations and loans from the Bay Area lacrosse community.
Josh offered scholarships to his Tiger Lacrosse Camp, held in San Francisco June 18-21, 2001, to the boys attending these practices and Johanna arranged for scholarships for 4 girls to attend the Olympic Club lacrosse camp held in July 2001.
September - November 2001
Fall instruction sessions garnered the interest of dozens of local children.
December 2001 - January 2002
Boys began winter practice sessions with loaned equipment in preparation for the spring 2002 Northern California Junior Lacrosse Association season.
Awarded national USLacrosse Youth Combo Grant.
March - April 2002
Boys' team competed in NCJLA season, with 2-3 days a week of after-school practice and 10 weekend games.
Girls participated in instructional clinics.
May 2002
KRON-4 TV segment airs on 5/2/02.
Feature article in the San Francisco Chronicle on 5/10/02.
Hosted 6-team jamboree 5/12/02 at Palega Playground.
Received California Governor's Letter of Commendation.
June 2002
Hosted end-of-season banquet through private donations to award boys' team for completing their team commitments.
Visited MLK and Bayview Hunter's Point YMCA Beacon Center for recruitment.
Held introductory lacrosse clinics for interested youth at Palega Playground.
October - December 2002
Contracted with ER Taylor Elementary and Visitacion Valley Beacon Center after-school program for weekly instructional sessions for twenty-five 3rd-5th graders.
Recruited volunteer staff of 10 to assist with Fall Ball sessions.
Held 2nd Annual Holiday Benefit.
Were awarded $15,000 grant from SF Bay Club.
Feature article in Nov/Dec Lacrosse magazine.
USLacrosse recognized co-founders, Andrew McDonald and Josh Miller as Exceptional Urban/Motivation lacrosse coaches of the year at 2003 Convention. |
